Impact of Westernization - Westernization Vs cULTURE

Critically examine Westernization.
Westernization is a process in which societies adopt western cultures in areas such as industry, technology, law, politics, economics and lifestyles, clothing, language etc. The intercontinental exchanges through migration, colonialism, search for better lives and economic forces have led the westernization to come in the borders of countries. Westernization has impacted the traditions and cultures of the nations at a large extent.
India is one of the ancient civilized nations and is known for its distinct culture and tradition across the world.  With more than 700 dialects and for being the origin country for religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism, India has its unique place. But with the growing impact of westernization over the Indian culture is diminishing the diversity and originality of its traditions. Swami Vivekanand was also among those who opposed western culture and supported the indigenous culture over the external influences.
Westernization has both positives and negatives in terms of changes it created. It benefited the nation in different ways also.
Negative impacts
Culture: It had impacted the culture of the nation as the younger generations are showing lesser interests in the indigenous culture. They have started questioning the authorities of vedas, manusmriti and other scriptures. De-Brahaminization and De-Sanskritization of society is very evident in present situation. Endogamy, vegetarianism, teetotialism and courtship have become things of past. The westernization has impacted people believes and way of living.
Food: The younger generations have developed a taste for foreign cuisines and fast foods. This has impacted their health and caused the obesity and malnutrition at the same time.
Language: The diverse base of dialects is contracting under the influence of English language. English has become as a symbol of status and being civilized.
Family: The concept of joint family has been vanished and has been taken over by the nuclear family. The establishment of old age homes is a serious concern which clearly depicts the deterioration of our foundation of love and care.
Lifestyle: The western clothing and living styles are making a huge impact. Now the Indian dresses have become so obsolete that we have to organize the cultural fest to showcase our culture.
Entertainment: The liking for western music and cinema has increased among the youth and traditional dramas and theatres have become the things of the past.
Positive Impacts
Health: The incoming of westernized health system have helped in rising of living standards and health indices such as child mortality rate, maternal mortality rate, reduction of death rates etc.
Education: The advent of incoming of modern education has helped people to become more civilized and rationale. It helped them in getting better economic status and more aware of their political rights.
Technology: It has helped in ease of doing things. Better communication, transport, higher production, information travel has helped people in every sphere.
Social evils: Westernization has influenced the social norms and structure. Widow re-marriage, child marriage, endogamy, polygamy, polyandry, infant foeticide etc have been reduced or removed.
Conclusion: The impact of westernization has influenced the country in both ways. Westernization is not an evil. The need is just to intact the indigenous culture with the modernization by balancing process.
